Following reports that primary school pupils in Scotland were able to access pornography on iPads provided by their schools, Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth has intervened. She has contacted local council leaders, urging them to ensure robust controls are in place on all devices issued to children to block adult content. This comes after Edinburgh City Council took action to restrict access to certain search engines after it was discovered that pupils could easily disable Safe Search features.

The SNP Education Secretary has been forced to intervene following shock reports that primary pupils were able to access pornography on iPads handed out by schools.

The school-issued iPads have a filtering agent which is supposed to protect children at school and at home from accessing explicit content. Gilruth did not say how many children had used the devices to access pornography but said it was believed that only one had visited an “inappropriate page on Wikipedia”.

Gilruth added that councils “have robust technologies and processes in place and are doing their utmost to protect every learner in Scotland”.
