The UK's fishing boats emit the same amount of carbon dioxide as 110,000 homes every year, a new report claims.
The report estimates that mitigating the amount of carbon lost from these fishing methods between 2016 and 2050 will cost the economy up to £9bn.
"The ocean is the blue heart of our planet and, when tackling the climate and nature crises, we ignore it at our peril."The fishing sector claims it is faced with a "burgeoning and misguided campaign" by environmentalists It also urges governments to mandate vessels to install monitoring such as cameras and GPS technology and calls for more research into the role of blue carbon.
Shetland Fishermen's Association chief executive, Simon Collins, has called on ministers to resist the "burgeoning and misguided campaign" being waged on the sector.
