Three imposing bridges cross over the Firth of Forth
Prior to the construction of the bridges, ferry boats were the only means to cross the Firth of the Forth that linked the North East of the country with Edinburgh and the South. The Briggers, the name given to the thousands of men who built the Forth Bridge, started construction in 1882, and the crossing was opened on March 4, 1890, by the Duke of Rothesay.
The Forth Road Bridge followed, completed in 1964, with a final bill for construction of £19.5million. It was opened byon September 4, 1964. After it dogged by maintenance problems, the decision was taken to proceed with a replacement bridge. The new Queensferry crossing was completed in August 2017, after construction began six years earlier. It was the biggest infrastructure project in Scotland in a generation and replaced the Forth Road Bridge as the main road route between Edinburgh and Fife, carrying 24 million vehicles a year.
