One of the most pressing issues is the exorbitant number of individuals on NHS waiting lists. Opposition leaders frequently highlight the statistic that nearly one in six Scots are awaiting treatment or tests. This figure exceeds 800,000, with thousands facing wait times exceeding a year. Labour has expressed concern that these extended delays are forcing individuals to seek private healthcare, a trend reflected in the 21,000 private hospital admissions in Scotland last year. Notably, a quarter of all hip and knee replacement surgeries performed last year were conducted privately. Swinney has recognized this problem and pledged to reduce waiting lists by the year's end.Another area of significant concern is the performance of Scotland's Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments. These departments have been at the forefront of the NHS crisis. Official figures reveal that 1,642 Scots waited over 12 hours to be seen at an A&E ward in the week leading up to December 29th. The Scottish Government aims for 95% of patients to be seen within four hours, a target that has not been met since 2017. In the week ending January 5th, only 58.7% of patients were seen within the four-hour timeframe. Further challenges plague the NHS, including missed cancer waiting times, a shortage of dentists, and a growing maintenance backlog. The Scottish Government continues to fall short of its target for cancer waiting times, with around 1,200 patients on urgent referrals for suspected cancer not starting treatment within 62 days. In October, six council areas had no dental practices able to accept new adult patients within three months. The NHS maintenance backlog has reached a record £1.3 billion, forcing the postponement of new building projects.
