Dorothy Bain, the Lord Advocate, expresses concerns about the seven-year investigation into Sam Eljamel, a surgeon who left hundreds of patients injured. Bain criticizes the lack of progress and calls for increased action from Police Scotland.
Police Scotland has faced criticism from Scotland's top prosecutor, Dorothy Bain, over its seven-year investigation into butcher surgeon Sam Eljamel . Bain expressed in a letter to victim Jules Rose that the investigation 'has simply not progressed as it should have'. Despite a decade-long probe codenamed Operation Stringent, no charges have been brought against Eljamel.
Bain, who leads Scotland's prosecution service, stated her concerns about the investigation's progress and met with police in September 2023 to emphasize them. Rose hopes the letter will prompt Police Scotland to prioritize the case. She called for a meeting with the Chief Constable and stressed the need to investigate anyone who may have enabled or covered up Eljamel's actions. Rose criticized the investigation's slow pace, highlighting the lack of a dedicated senior officer for five years and expressing a feeling of being ignored by authorities. Eljamel left hundreds of patients with injuries and was ultimately suspended from NHS Tayside before leaving for Libya
