Figures released under freedom of information have revealed the amount some Police Scotland officers have received - despite force bosses struggling to plug gaps in the public service.
A police officer was paid almost £45,000 in overtime last year as force chiefs struggled to plug gaps in services to the public.
The news comes at a time when police numbers in Scotland are at an all time low. David Kennedy, general secretary of the Scottish Police Federation, said there was a desperate need for more police officers. Overall in the last five years £136.4m was paid in overtime to police officers and £16.2m to civilian staff – a total of £152.7m. Around £3m in overtime payments were made last year to cops attending court on their days off.

In December the Sunday Mail revealed how officers are at breaking point with record numbers off work each week due to mental health problems and how attacks on police have rocketed by more than 25 per cent in the last decade.
