Retired postman John Gillespie, 70, said he was never told he needed a new key after being automatically switched to the new supplier when a previous firm collapsed.
A Scots grandad was hit with a £500 bill from ScottishPower after they failed to tell him he needed a new key for his prepayment meter. Retired postman John Gillespie was recently transferred into sheltered housing and submitted his final readings to the energy supplier.
“I was with an energy company that went bust so I was automatically moved over to ScottishPower. I didn't get a choice in the matter. I don’t imagine I’m the only person that this has affected either. When I first got the bill, I thought it was someone trying to con me. “I was upset because I couldn’t understand how on earth I could owe them this much money. You put £20 or £40 onto your key and then into the machine and you think that’s you covered for everything you’re using.
A spokesperson for ScottishPower said: “We’re sorry for the issues experienced by Mr Gillespie, which appear to have stemmed from the fact he continued to use his previous supplier’s prepayment top-up key after he transferred to ScottishPower.
