Scots language should be treated like an endangered species, says children's author James Robertson, whose translations of children’s books into Scots have sold tens of thousands of copies, said the language was under ‘huge pressure’ 🔴 ChrisGreenNews

“We were conscious that there were very few – in fact, almost no – books available for children written in Scots at all,” he says about why he founded Itchy Coo 20 years ago.

Robertson believes that while this is an important issue, it is also fairly “tedious” and reductive because it misses the point that Scots is in use everywhere, all the time. “I was intrigued by words from a very early age and I just thought this was interesting, so I kept my lugs [ears] open, and I realised there was this kind of bilingual thing going on all around me which nobody made anything of.”

“One of the difficulties for Scots – which is a different problem than for say Gaelic – is that it’s a sister language to English, and its roots are exactly the same,” he explains.
