A Scots MP in the running for a top Westminster job has hit out at SNP Westminster politicians for trying to "put a protective shield around the Scottish Government".

He also said "part of" the committee's job if he were elected as chair would be holding the Scottish Government to account. Select committee chairs receive £18,309 on top of their £91,346 yearly salary. This means they earn £109,655 a year. "Actually, they weren't taking responsibility for the areas that were devolved and were fully under their remit.

"We're here on the behalf of our constituents. They're going to want us to understand why, in education, the attainment grab continues to grow?"Why is our economy not growing at the rate it should be? What is our industrial strategy? Because I think there's a big piece of work that can be done around are we ready for the industrial strategy, green jobs, the future, the skills policies as well.
