Claire and Andy Stewart have helped fund two new research projects into alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma - which Ruby was diagnosed with in 2017.
An Inchture couple’s fundraising in memory of their six-year-old daughter has helped fund two vital new research projects into the type of cancer she died from.Within weeks, she couldn’t walk or stand because the cancer had spread to the muscles in her spine. Despite her treatment initially working well, the cancer grew back, and Ruby passed away in January 2020, just two weeks before her seventh birthday.
“The world would be a better place if there were more people like her. That’s why we think ‘Be More Ruby’ is a fitting tribute to her.” The research team has already found markers that are only found in certain conditions in tumours, like low oxygen levels. In this project, they will test which of these markers is best able to predict risk for patients.
“This approach means that medicines will be both more effective and gentler on the rest of the body.” Speaking about the new projects, Claire said: “It is now over four-and-a-half years since Ruby died. Almost seven years since she was diagnosed.
