EXCLUSIVE: David Wilson, a member of Inverclyde Council, hit out at an SNP suggestion that all elected members attend training on anti-sectarianism.
A Scottish Conservative councillor has been criticised after he described a seminar on anti-sectarianism as "a load of old tosh". David Wilson, a member of Inverclyde Council , also said he would "not be lectured to" by the leading charity Nil by Mouth.
Drew McKenzie also used the terms "Tim" and "Proddy" in the column, for which he later issued an unreserved apology. The SNP group later suggested training should be undertaken by all councillors to "heal" community anger about McKenzie's comments. Scottish politics Nil by Mouth is a charity which describes its "sole purpose" as "achieving a society free from sectarianism where cultural and religious diversity is respected". It was founded in 2000 by Cara Henderson in response to the sectarian murder of her school friend Mark Scott in 1995.
Dave Scott, director of Nil by Mouth, said: "These sessions are offered free of charge and aren’t 'lectures' but discussions, facilitated by experienced staff providing elected members with opportunities to talk about sectarianism and related issues in a mature and honest way.
