British Transport Police officers at Scottish railway stations worked with counterparts across England

Plain-clothes cops in Scotland helped to bring down an alleged cross-country drug smuggling operation that saw 33 people arrested and over 16kg of drugs seized. British Transport Police officers operating at Scottish railway stations worked with counterparts across England to take down the 'county lines' ring earlier this month.

The intelligence-led operation saw 10.5kg of cannabis allegedly seized from a man at Birmingham New Street on January 16. A suitcase containing 6kg of cannabis was allegedly seized at Wolverhampton station just one hour later. Drug dogs were used to intercept weapons, other drugs and illicit cash. Detective Inspector Brian Buddo, of the County Lines Taskforce, said: “The results from this intelligence-led operation are testament to the effective joint working between us, our policing colleagues and third sector partners. The arrests and seizures made should serve as a stark warning to county lines offenders – our plain clothes teams will catch you and put you before the courts.

'County lines' gangs seek to move drug supplies out of big cities and into smaller areas such as towns and rural villages. Often, the gangs will recruit vulnerable children to transport goods, using coercion and threats to make them comply.
