Scott Benton claims he was 'suspicious of bogus gambling firm' after Blackpool MP filmed in undercover sting operation
Scott Benton has claimed he was suspicious any contact with a 'gambling firm' would have been in breach of parliamentary rules prior to it emerging the company did not exist.
Reporters posed as representatives of non-existent firm TAHR Partners at a central London hotel in March. During the meeting, Mr Benton suggested he would be happy to be paid between up to £4,000 a month to help the company.But the MP says he contacted the Commons Registrar and the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner immediately after the meeting. In a statement, Benton says he was concerned he was concerned what was being asked of him wasn't in the rules.
"I met with two individuals claiming to represent the company to find out what this role entailed. After this meeting, I was asked to forward my CV and some other personal details. I did not do so as I was concerned that what was being asked of me was not within parliamentary rules. During the Times video, Mr Benton is seen criticising the new Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer for not having “a grasp of the detail of the reform she should have at this stage”, saying his conversation with her had set “alarm bells ringing”.
