A Liberal MP has suggested former prime minister Scott Morrison should consider his future so that the party can rebuild and move forward in the wake of the Robodebt findings.
The former prime minister’s post-parliamentary career has been widely speculated on, but some now believe the job search may be on holdBy staying on a bit longer it will dispel speculation he was forced out following the damning report into the scheme, which was implemented by him in 2015 during his stint as the social services minister.
“I personally think it’s always difficult for a former prime minister to stay on in parliament,” she told The Age. The scheme was designed to recover more than $3 billion in Centrelink debt via an automated service, but came under fire for distributing about 460,000 false debt notices which caused significant trauma to recipients and their families.
It also found the scheme was a"crude and cruel mechanism" rolled out by the government which made many vulnerable Australians feel like"criminals". "They are wrong, unsubstantiated and contradicted by clear documentary evidence presented to the Commission. Following the release of the report on Friday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was asked about his predecessor’s future in parliament.
