The Masters champion's Friday ordeal shocked the sports world.
If you looked at the leaderboard of the PGA Championship midway through the second round Friday afternoon, you would see American Scottie Scheffler at nine-under par—tied for second place.
What you would not see was a hint of one of the most shocking off-the-course moments in golf history. In the early hours of the morning, Scheffler wasand charged with felony second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic—all, allegedly, while trying to enter Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville.
Scheffler, per ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, had been trying to avoid the scene of a bus accident that killed a man hours earlier. Later, Scheffler gave Darlington and other reporters a surreal account of his time in jail. “I feel like my head is still spinning," Scheffler said. "I can’t really explain what happened. I did spend some time stretching in the jail cell.”
Scottie Scheffler: “I feel like my head is still spinning. I can’t really explain what happened. I did spend some time stretching in the jail cell.”Though much of the morning's events remains hazy, Scheffler's performance remained steady. His five-under second round has him two shots back of leader and countryman Collin Morikawa.
