The Scottish castle where William Wallace was taken following his capture in 1305 is set to reopen following repairs.
In December, Historic Environment Scotland was accused of failing to act immediately to shut down some of its crumbling historic buildings identified as dangerous to the staff and public. It had reportedly received internal professional advice that an immediate closure of a number of sites was needed so that a hands-on survey could be undertaken.
Historic Environment Scotland denied the allegations and insisted that it had "always been guided first and foremost by the safety of our staff, visitors and contractors and to ensure they are not put at any risk". This week's top Scotland Now stories Historic Environment Scotland has been completing inspections at 25 sites across Scotland since May, with 13 more due to be completed by Spring. Work at these sites can reportedly take upwards of a month due to the scope of the task and the different characteristics of the buildings, many of which date back several hundred years.
Craig Mearns, director of operations at Historic Environment Scotland, said: "I am delighted to announce that we will soon be reopening Dumbarton Castle to visitors.
