General paediatricians – who care for children from birth to late adolescence – are the largest element in the shortfall, accounting for more than half of the extra recruitment needed in Scotland
A damning report by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health warns the NHS faces a new recruitment crisis. Experts demanded urgent action to boost the number of paediatricians by 25 per cent to cope with soaring demand, and opposition MSPs said the shocking figures were further evidence of the SNP’s mismanagement of the NHS. Recruitment in Scotland lags behind England, with the number of doctors increasing by 5 percent between 2015 and 2017 compared to 8.2 percent south of the Border.
