A leading charity has called on the Scottish Government to help struggling families by increasing the number of free school meals
.School meals are free to all children in primary one to five, but First Minister Humza Yousaf recently signalled a rethink on expanding universal benefits.
The current threshold for free school meals for older pupils is currently £18,725. Aberlour said if the cut off point had risen in line with historical inflation, it would now be £27,855 per household. “Income thresholds for free school meal eligibility have barely risen in the last twenty years, when they were first introduced. In 2002 low income working families with an income of less than £13,230 were eligible for free school meals. Today that income threshold has risen to £18,725.
Labour MSP Pam Duncan-Glancy said: “The SNP must come good on their commitment for free school meals in primary schools and provide councils with the funds to scrap school meal debt. These proposals show that the current system is outdated and does not reflect the reality of the cost of living for lots of families across Scotland
