EXCLUSIVE: A former Yes campaign chief said too many Labour politicians 'were eagerly jumping into bed with the Tories' ahead of the 2014 referendum on independence.

The lack of Scottish Labour members who publicly supported independence in 2014 helped condemn the Yes side to defeat, senior campaign figures have said.

Jenkins spoke out ahead of the 10th anniversary of the referendum which saw 55 per cent of voters reject Scotland going it alone. "I'm aware of Labour people who I know voted Yes and I know were in favour of independence, who never said so. "I saw part of my job as trying to persuade traditional Labour voters to vote for independence," he told the Record.

Gray was one of the most powerful politicians in Scotland when he led what was the largest local authority in Western Europe from 1986 to 1992. "I still believe that independence will come but more people need to be persuaded, especially traditional Labour voters."
