In a show of solidarity, thousands of Scots have written to their local MSPs to support hospices facing a £25 million funding gap. The public outcry has led one MSP to request a ministerial statement on funding, with 33 cross-party MSPs also calling for urgent support.

Thousands of people from across Scotland have sent letters to their Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) to support Scottish Hospices , which are facing a £25 million funding shortfall. In just under a week, nearly 5,000 people have sent letters to their local MSPs, asking for support for hospices before the Scottish budget is decided on December 4.

The public outcry has prompted one MSP to formally request that the Scottish Government schedule time for a ministerial statement on hospice care funding. This comes after years of underfunding by the Scottish Government, coupled with rising costs such as matching NHS pay awards and increased employer National Insurance, leading to a significant budget shortfall for hospices. The public support has been echoed by 33 cross-party MSPs who have signed an open letter from Miles Briggs MSP, calling for urgent funding for hospices. Jacki Smart, Chair of the Scottish Hospice Leadership Group, thanked the public for their support and emphasized the critical need for state support to continue providing free-of-charge care
