The local council have backed plans for a new tourist tax in a Scottish region — with the new levy set to affect anyone staying in holiday accommodation such as hotels in the area.
Councillors in East Lothian have unanimously agreed to back a proposed Visitor Levy Scheme. The scheme would see guests charged a nightly fee to stay in holiday accommodation in the area, including hotels and hostels.
Local councillor Jeremy Findlay expressed his support for the levy. However, he voiced concerns about its impact on small businesses. Most visitors said the introduction of a levy wouldn't affect their decision to visit East Lothian again. Meanwhile, 14 per cent said they would be less likely to visit as a result, and 3 per cent more likely.
