Loreen played the game and won That it was maddening is exactly the point 🖋️ LouisStaples for ipaperviews
presented us with that dilemma. And no, I’m not talking about the supremely talented commentator Rylan Clarke, but Finland’s entry: Käärijä. “Cha Cha Cha” – which he performed bare-chested in green neon – is part-chant, part heart-pounding banger. Like a tequila shot in song form, it took the show by storm.
I’ve been in Liverpool all week and the songs from last night’s concert have been played pretty much everywhere: bars, restaurants, convenience stores and even in Gregg’s when I was buying a sausage roll. And every time “Cha Cha Cha” has come on, the entire place has been taken over by its hectic energy. Inside the arena at Saturday’s final, were getting visibly irritated by the crowd, who would not stop chanting the song.
But alas, it wasn’t enough: Loreen, Sweden’s entry, had built up a large lead with the jury vote. Her performance of “Tattoo” was visually stunning and her vocals were flawless. The UK jury, like most of Europe, gave her the maximum 12 points. Combined with a very respectable televote score of 243 points, it was enough to take her over the line, making her the first female act ever to win the contest twice .
. Some people have even called for the jury vote – which was introduced in 2014 – to be scrapped. But that would be a mistake, because without the jury vote, there would always be that lingering suspicion that the points weren’t based on talent and performance. Countries like the UK – who until recently put very little effort into the contest – throw our toys out of the pram and use Eurovison as evidence for our paranoid theory that everyone has a vendetta against us.
I don’t necessarily mind that the end result was controversial and that fans are now hotly debating what makes a Eurovision performance good. That is the central question that the contest asks each year:It’s what makes it such a fun viewing experience, where groups of people watch together and realise how different they are when they assign cultural value to completely opposing things. It’s fascinating and maddening.
