SDCC 2024: Paul Feig Praises Awkwafina & John Cena's Chemistry In Jackpot
Summary Written by Rob Yescombe, Jackpot! will be available to stream on Prime Video beginning August 15. Rather than being overjoyed by her winning lottery ticket, Katie Kim finds herself fighting to survive the day. California's new "Grand Lottery" states that anyone who kills the winner may claim the multi-billion dollar jackpot, painting a target on the ticket holder's back.
Paul Feig Shares His First Impression Of The Jackpot! Script Screen Rant: What drew you to the story? Can you talk about your approach to creating this world? Paul Feig: I'm a Jackie Chan fanatic and a Hong Kong film fanatic. I love Jackie's movies because he's always in over his head. He's never looking for a fight; he's trying to get out of a fight. And that's why, when I read this, I was like, "This is the Jackie Chan movie we always wanted to make." I dove into it, and I knew it was also my chance to do more comedy action than I'd done before.
But then I had a Zoom with John, and he was so great that I fell in love with him. He was like, "Look, I don't want you to think you ought to make me look cool or anything. I'm up for anything funny." I was like, "You are my hero." Because somebody like that could easily be like, "I can just be tough and all this," but I love this character because he's a big nerd.
When John has Nora strapped to his back, that just came out of being like, "I wish he could keep her behind him. What if we just tied her on his back?" He was like, "Can we do that?" "Yeah, we can do that." Paul Feig: Simu is so smart. He read it and really came in knowing what he wanted to do with it. I was like, "You've got to wear a three-piece white suit. You have to wear an all-white suit.
It's really because comedy people are tennis players; you have to have somebody else to play against, and they're all very supportive. I've only had one time in my career when I was involved with something - that wasn't mine - where the lead funny person wanted to be the only funny person, and it was not good because if anybody else had a funny joke, suddenly that joke would be taken away or given to that person.
