The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) will not attend St Patrick's Day events in Washington DC next month, citing the US government's support for Israel during the recent conflict in Gaza. This marks the second consecutive year the party has boycotted the festivities, which traditionally include presentations by Irish political leaders to the US President. SDLP leader Claire Hanna expressed concerns over the US stance, particularly former President Donald Trump's rhetoric on the displacement of Palestinians. Northern Ireland's First and Deputy First Ministers have yet to confirm their attendance.
The SDLP has ruled out attending any events for St Patrick’s Day in Washington DC next month. Traditionally, political leaders from across the island travel to the US capital every March to take part in events.
“Last year, the SDLP made the decision not to send anyone to Washington for St Patrick’s Day as we could not endorse the US government while it armed and supported the bombardment of Gaza,” she said.
