'He deserves an apology and a correction in the same format, in other words a public apology to that officer.'

A police officer who was publicly reprimanded by the Chief Constable over the handling of an event to mark the anniversary of the Sean Graham massacre has been cleared of any wrongdoing.

The Public Prosecution Service found in December 2021 that there were no grounds to prosecute the officers on. On whether the officer who had been completely exonerated should receive a public apology from the Chief Constable, Mr Kelly said outreach work needed to be undertaken by PSNI senior management."That's not common practice firstly and indeed it's unheard of in my experience.

"Particularly at this point the repositioned officer, who has been completely exonerated of any wrongdoing whatsoever, I think the senior management of the PSNI need to reach out to that officer. At the time of the incident, the two police officers involved were still serving their probationary period, having only graduated from the Policing College in July 2020.

"If they'd been armed with that information, then when they came across the crowd outside Sean Grahams, they could have made a judgement call, which police do every day."If he had had that information perhaps he wouldn't have done something that related to misconduct. "The file related to two police officers and the PPS subsequently directed that neither officer should be prosecuted.
