While some teams may look at the SEC tournament as simply a way to improve their standing for the upcoming regional, some people, it just means more.
It does not mean more. No one would make that argument. Not even Hoover’s mayor or chamber of commerce would or could make a case that the SEC Baseball Tournament means more than the NCAA Baseball Tournament.
This is the best college baseball tournament in the country, spotlighting the best college baseball conference in the land, but dogpiling in the Hoover Met dirt on Sunday afternoon is not the ultimate goal of the 12 teams that traveled here this week. And that’s OK.
Just because the SEC’s catchphrase does not apply in this instance, that big-picture perspective does not diminish the league’s signature annual event in this state. Its 27th edition at the Hoover Met may not feel like the first time in 1996, but this ballpark, this city and this event have grown up together. They’re getting older and they’re getting better for a reason that runs deeper than all the infrastructure upgrades and stylish enhancements.
Down there in the dirt, where it counts the most, it still means something. In an all-or-nothing world that coldly regards the teams that don’t win the natty as losers, that’s as refreshing as a large cup of Dippin’ Dots on an 88-degree day at the park.
