Tim Andrews becomes the second known individual to successfully receive a pig kidney transplant, marking a significant advancement in the field of xenotransplantation. His remarkable recovery raises hopes for a future where organ shortages are alleviated through this groundbreaking approach.

Mass General Brigham has announced the successful completion of another gene-edited pig kidney transplant , a milestone in the field of xenotransplantation. Tim Andrews , a 66-year-old from Concord, New Hampshire, is the second person known to be living with a pig kidney. Andrews, who had been struggling with kidney failure for two years and facing a lengthy wait for a human donor kidney, underwent the groundbreaking transplant on January 25, 2025.

His recovery has been remarkable, and he was discharged from the hospital just a week after the procedure, free from the burden of dialysis. This breakthrough comes at a crucial time in the quest to address the critical shortage of human organs for transplantation. Previous attempts at pig organ transplants, including two heart and two kidney transplants, were unfortunately short-lived. However, the successful case of Towana Looney, an Alabama woman who received a pig kidney transplant at NYU Langone Health in November 2022, has sparked renewed optimism in the field. Looney has been thriving for over two and a half months after her transplant, demonstrating the potential of this revolutionary approach.Building on this progress, Mass General Brigham has received FDA permission to conduct a three-person pilot study using gene-edited pig kidneys supplied by biotech company eGenesis. Meanwhile, United Therapeutics, another developer of gene-edited pig organs, has just won FDA approval for the world's first clinical trial of xenotransplantation, initially involving six patients who will receive pig kidneys. If these initial recipients fare well over six months, the trial could expand to include up to 50 additional patients. Andrews' case, alongside these ongoing clinical trials, represent significant steps forward in the field of xenotransplantation, offering hope for a future where organ shortages no longer pose a threat to life
