The country saw a worrying surge of 2,615 new cases on Thursday - nearly double the 1,357 new infections reported the previous day.
Meanwhile, French Prime Minister Jean Castex has cautioned his government cannot rule out closing the borders again following the spike.
Catalonia, which borders France, has been a hotspot for the virus, with 7,000 cases in the past 14 days, while Aragon has also been pinpointed as a place of concern. Reports this week claimed the UK government was considering taking Spain off the ‘safe list’ of 79 countries people in England can visit without the need for two-week isolation.
Tourism Minister Maria Reyes Maroto insisted that Spain’s two worst-hit areas, Catalonia and Aragon, were ‘getting better’ this week.
