The boss of the Secret Service has 'made the difficult decision' to step down from the top job amid anger and pressure from both Republicans and Democrats to resign in the wake of the shooting of Donald Trump almost two weeks ago.
Kimberly Cheatle resigns from Secret Service top job as she takes 'full responsibility' for security lapse at Donald Trump rally where he was shot
Secret Service agents pounced on the former president and minutes later escorted him to a waiting car. The shooting left a volunteer firefighter dead and two people injured. Ms Cheatle caved to the pressure, announcing she will quit after the federal law enforcement agency"fell short" in protecting Trump at the campaign rally.
"However, I do not want my calls for resignation to be a distraction from the great work each and every one of you do towards our vital mission… "As a leader, it takes honor, courage, and incredible integrity to take full responsibility for an organization tasked with one of the most challenging jobs in public service," the 81-year-old said about Ms Cheatle in a statement.
However, Ms Cheatle recognised there were"significant" problems at the Pennsylvania rally and vowed to move"heaven and Earth" to ensure it did not happen again.
