'I would always give somebody who was too f***ed a bit of a wide berth, really'
For over 20 years, Richard Kelly has taken his camera around Manchester's hottest nightclubs, photographing clubbers in their hedonistic bliss.Now Richard is ready to spill the beans on what life is like as a nightclub snapper and how nightlife has evolved over two decades.
The exhibition also features the work of fellow Manchester-based photographer Johnny Black. Johnny is one of the new breed of club photographers who picked up where Richard left off. "The night-time landscape has totally changed in terms of the cost of going out and how organised it is. It did feel a lot more 'Wild West' when I first started going out in the '90s and then early 2000s", he added.Richard said one of his favourite haunts to snap clubbers was the Electric Chair nights, which began life at The Roadhouse before moving to Music Box, adding: "It just felt a lot more rough and ready.
Richard said: "I think that they could tell I wasn't there as a tourist; I mean, I was really into the music, and I really felt part of it. But I was always received really warmly. I'd never have any problems.Richard said he always went in with an "open mind" and never felt his photography was "voyeuristic". He added he never took photos of "anyone who was too off their head or wouldn't want to be photographed.
"I'd like to think that was still the case, but as I don't really go out and take pictures that much I don't know." Having given up club photography a few years ago, Richard said things about doing the job are now better and worse.
