WASHINGTON – JD Vance’s presence on the Republican ticket is a cause for heightened security protections – to the disappointment of his neighbors. For some of them, it means the loss of a favorite park.
“The park perimeter will be barricaded and monitored 24/7 by law enforcement. ... There will be a significant presence in the area providing security for a Secret Service Protectee,” the city said.Another resident, Emily Cooper, said she regularly visited the park to walk her dog, Bowser. The party “wasn’t anything more than just the community saying goodbye to this space where we gather all the time,” says Becky Hammer, an Alexandria lawyer,Hammer says she’s spent hundreds of hours there and conceded that some have grumbled about the inconvenience. “I think people are surprised it didn’t happen earlier,” she said.
Neighbor Pierce Kreutzer, a self-described Republican, told The Post he has chatted with Vance and was not surprised when Donald Trump tapped him as his vice-presidential running mate. “He railed against the liberal elites and then he picked the wealthy liberal neighborhood outside D.C. to bring up his kids,” Kreutzer, a commercial real estate broker who lives a few doors away, told The Post. “He’s more aligned, truly, with people like me than he is with your typical Trump voter.”
