Skylynn Townsend from Prosper Rock Hill will go head-to-head with her idol, Olympian Jasmine Moore from Mansfield Lake Ridge.
“It was very tough at first,” Townsend said last year of learning the triple jump and long jump. “But going back to my background in gymnastics, I just realized it was like doing vault and floor. I watched a couple of Jasmine Moore videos, and I studied her and I studied the Olympians. They are great role models.”with a mark of 15.12 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2023, even texted Townsend last year. That was to congratulate Townsend forby a high school junior in U.S.
For Townsend to compete at the Olympics, she will have to finish in the top three at the trials and will also have to obtain the Olympic qualifying standard of 14.55 meters . Moore has a world ranking in the triple jump, so she just needs a top-three finish to make the Olympic team.Townsend competed three days in a row between the U20 meet and the Nike Outdoor Nationals, starting Wednesday and finishing Friday. She got just a one-week break before the Olympic Trials.
“Making the team is the No. 1 goal, being top three ,” Moore said. “Besides that, I would like to win triple jump and give myself some more confidence in the long jump.”
