before his move was announced, Seidl has reflected on McLaren’s performance. A tough start to the season saw McLaren as a back-marker due to brake issues. This in turn impacted performance, leading to a difficult race in Bahrain.
Seidl admits the team has not “been where we wanted to be starting this new era of F1”: “When I look back at the season now, I obviously haven’t forgotten the difficult start we had in Bahrain, the brake issues. Also, in terms of performance, we haven’t been where we wanted to be starting this new era of F1 – we were running pretty much at the back of the field,” said Seidl.
McLaren staged a quick fightback, finishing P5 and P6 in Melbourne. Lando Norris took his and McLaren’s best result of the season, finishing P3 at Imola.Seidl said car developments aided this fightback, which helped McLaren go from back-markers to P4 contenders. Seidl called out “very positive things” at the team that also contributed to its turnaround:
“But then, obviously, I see a lot of positives, because looking at the reaction of the team, seeing how we were fighting back, looking at the developments we brought to the car – which then put us in a position again to get back into the fight for P4 against a very strong Alpine team – is something which was very positive.”
