Self-driving cars could be more likely to hit and kill black people due to flaws in the software used to detect objects, researchers have warned.
Using cutting edge ‘object detection’ models , the researchers found that the software was 5% less accurate for dark-skinned people. The report, Predictive Inequity in Object Detection has not yet been published or peer-reviewed,The researchers used a dataset of images containing pedestrians, and classified them by skin tone.
Self-driving cars are much safer than cars driven by people – with ROSPA research showing 95% of accidents involve human error, and in 76% of cases, a human is solely to blame. MIT research shows that most people agree that a driverless car should sacrifice its passenger to save, say, 10 pedestrians – with 76% agreeing that cars should be programmed in this way.
