The Republican challenger to U.S. Sen. Robert P. Casey met with a small group of veterans at an American Legion post in Ephrata Friday.

Paul Chaplin | Special to PennLiveEPHRATA - Dave McCormick kept chipping away Friday at a voting bloc he sees as a potential key to the success of his challenge for the U.S. Senate seat held by incumbent U.S. Sen. Robert P. Casey Jr.: veterans.
But it’s still a demographic that most Republican candidates can’t get enough of, especially a candidate like McCormick who has devoted a large share of his summer broadcast advertising to commercials that highlight his own history as a West Point graduate and former U.S. Army officer.voters who are military veterans tend to favor the Republican Party.
Another veteran, Mike Zimmerman, 59, of Manheim Township, voiced his concerns about what he saw as an increased politicization of the armed services, from an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion policies to post Jan. 06, 2021 efforts to root out “political extremism” among the troops. “I’m deeply committed to that... and I think it’s also linked to the recruiting crisis. If we’re not leaning in to support our vets, it’s going to make it much harder on the front end to attract people” to military service, McCormick said.
