Sullivan pointed to $800 million in military construction in the current bill.
with Newscenter Fairbanks, Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan discussed ongoing work with the National Defense Authorization Act , which is currently being negotiated and debated.
“We write that bill every year. By the way, that bill passes every year. Sixty-five years in a row, there’s an NDAA that sets the top line for military spending, it sets the policies, but this bill in particular this year has a number of very significant wins for Alaska, given how strategically important we are,” Sullivan explained.
“That’s everything from additional troops, barracks, we need the housing in Alaska for our troops, to more training, to more what they call morale and welfare facilities for Alaska. A lot of that will be here in the Interior, and as you know, that’s really good for national defense, but it’s also really good for the economy.
He added that there is a provision meant to combat mental health issues among active-duty soldiers. “You may have seen we’ve had a number of suicides in our active-duty military forces, particularly here in the Interior, and two years ago we got a pilot program to enable an allowance for young soldiers and airmen to be able to fly home over the holidays. It can be very lonely if you’re a PFC, say, from Alabama and you can’t get home.
“We have pay raises for our troops, which are really important, and again, just highlighting the strategic importance of Alaska,” Sullivan continued, adding, “There’s another provision that has the senior leadership of the Pentagon looking at possibly using some of our old military bases out on the Aleutian Island chain in a more active way.
