Victorian senator Ralph Babet says he does not know a neo-Nazi who posted a photo in which the man appeared to give the Nazi salute while posing with the politician.

Victorian senator Ralph Babet has distanced himself from a neo-Nazi who published a photo of himself appearing to give a Nazi salute while posing with the politician. On Saturday night, Nathan Bull, a member of the National Socialist Network, posted a photo of himself and Babet on social media site X with the caption “Heil Ralph Babet, Heil our people”, followed by two keyboard characters that look like a stick figure image of a person giving the gesture.

“‘Are you Ralph Babet?’ ‘Yes I am.’ ‘Can I have a photo?’ ‘OK, yeah sure.’ That’s the extent of it. ‘See you later, bye.’ ” Speaking out at a rally against antisemitism in Sydney, Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie said she was prepared to believe Babet didn’t know who Bull was when the photo was taken. Dvir Abramovich, the chair of Jewish-Australian community organisation the Anti-Defamation Commission, said he welcomed Babet’s “clear-eyed condemnation” of Bull. Abramovich described Bull as an “unapologetic Hitler worshipper”.“This incident is further proof that these white-supremacists are trying to gain legitimacy by inserting themselves into the political arena,” Abramovich said.
