Serena Williams' surprise Super Bowl halftime show performance alongside Kendrick Lamar has earned her a flood of support from Hollywood A-listers and beyond.
Serena Williams made a surprise appearance at the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday, joining rapper Kendrick Lamar for a flawless crip walk performance. The 43-year-old retired athlete, clad in a blue tennis skirt and matching jacket, took to the stage with Lamar, who was rapping his Grammy-winning hit, Not Like Us. The song, which solidified Lamar's victory in his rap battle with Aubrey 'Drake' Graham, also happens to be Serena's ex.
Williams' appearance, while brief, sparked an outpouring of support from celebrity friends on social media. Kerry Washington, Jamie Foxx, Amanda Kloots, Queen Latifah, Awkwafina, Tamar Braxton, and more took to Instagram to express their admiration for the tennis legend. Foxx left not one, but two comments, first calling Williams a 'Legend' and later adding that she 'Ate' - a term used to describe doing something exceptionally well. Kloots declared Serena's performance the 'best part of the show', while Braxton echoed Foxx's sentiment with 'Ate that, sis,' adding a fire emoji. Even automobile brand Lincoln chimed in, writing 'We see you,' with a starry-eyed emoji. Other stars who showed their love included Brooklyn Decker, who was 'Speechless' after seeing Williams' footwork on television, John Legend, who gave his approval with a set of fire emoji, and model Ashley Graham, who wrote the hook's lyric and added an abbreviation that meant, 'Let's f*****g go.' Queen Latifah lauded Serena, writing, '@serenawilliams is my SUPERHERO!!!!!' Comedic actress and writer Awkwafina dropped a trio of fire emoji to express support. Michael Jackson's sister LaToya Jackson got behind the tennis legend, writing, 'Oh, Serena, how cute! Love it!!!' Even Sesame Street muppet Elmo showed his love, writing, 'Great dance moves, Ms. Serena! Elmo loves you,' adding enthusiastic emoji. The performance also resonated with fans due to Serena's past relationship with Drake. The crip walk holds personal significance for Williams after she performed a similar celebratory dance when she defeated Maria Sharapova at the Olympics in 2012
