He tricked customers into paying thousands for work that was never completed
A serial conman from Nottingham who ripped off customers to the tune of tens of thousands of pounds, has been jailed. Cowboy builder Carl Mould, now going by the name Nicholas Hampshire, took more than £65,000 in cash from five customers for building and gardening work he had agreed to carry out between March 2021 and July 2022.
Daniel Lister, prosecuting on behalf of Nottinghamshire Trading Standards, said Hampshire was known as Carl Mould when he committed the fraud offences. He said: “From 2021 to 2022 he used the same Modus Operandi to deceive customers to pay for work that was never completed and which the defendant never intended to complete.
The prosecutor said the next victim was a woman who owned a flat in Nottingham city centre which Hampshire initially said was damp which he quoted £4,800 to repair but was actually damage caused by a leaking pipe which he then said would cost £25,000 to put right. He said the victim went through her insurance company but eventually tried to get back the £5,000 deposit she had paid the defendant but he refused.
In a victim impact statement, that woman said: “I am devastated both emotionally and financially by what Carl did to me. Carl knew I had inherited a little money and all he cared about was getting as much of it in his hands as he could. I have been left with no money and I have been left feeling embarrassed and ashamed. I honestly don't think he cared at all.”
