A BMW i3 collided with five other vehicles on Warrington Road in Ashton-in-Makerfield, reportedly due to a driver's medical episode. Four people were hospitalized, including an 80-year-old woman with life-threatening injuries, and students were kept indoors during the emergency response.
Four people have been rushed to hospital following a serious crash oustide a school. Police said a BMW i3 collided with five other vehicles on Warrington Road in Ashton-in-Makerfield, outside Byrchall High School, at around 1pm on Wednesday .
The driver is believed to have suffered a medical episode prior to the collision. Two drivers and two passengers remain in hospital, among them an 80-year-old woman who has suffered 'life-threatening injuries'. One man in his 70s and a woman are being treated for serious injuries not deemed life-threatening. Another man, in his 80s, is being treated for minor injuries.
Pupils were kept inside for a number of hours as the emergency services responded to the scene. The road, a key route between the town and the M6 and East Lancs Road, was shut for a number of hours with multiple police cars and fire engines at the scene, and two air ambulances landing nearby.
Videos from the scene showed several fire engines parked up outside the school with the entrance taped off, with parents and carers waiting at the entrance. Two damaged vehicles could be seen being loaded onto a trailer. Greater Manchester Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are investigating the incident and urge members of the public with any information to come forward. No arrests have been made.

It states: 'All of our students are safely making their way home. Today has been a difficult day for all of our community, and our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by today's events.
'We are very grateful to our students, families and to the many staff who came together to help and support each other and those involved. School will be open as normal tomorrow.
