Nottingham courts faced a deluge of serious cases in January 2025, including a nine-member burglary gang and two teenage gunmen who opened fire in a shopping centre.
The first month of 2025 has seen a number of truly serious cases come through our courtrooms. From a nine-strong burglary gang that targeted large homes across the region and beyond to two teenagers who shot at a man and then tried to flee to Spain. This month has been a particularly busy one for our courts, with a range of high-profile cases grabbing headlines. \One of the most notable cases involved a nine-member burglary gang that wreaked havoc across Nottinghamshire and neighboring areas.
This group, operating with precision and ruthlessness, targeted upscale detached homes, primarily during the early hours of the morning when residents were asleep. Over a period of four months, they managed to steal a staggering £300,000 worth of high-value vehicles, including prestigious brands like BMW, Mercedes, and Audi. Sometimes, they would even use the stolen vehicles for further criminal activities. \The gang's brazen tactics left victims feeling vulnerable and shaken. One particularly heartbreaking case involved a pregnant woman, 38 weeks along, whose home was targeted while she was sleeping alongside her husband and two young children. The impact of these burglaries extended far beyond the financial losses; it robbed families of their sense of security and peace of mind. The gang operated across a wide swathe of Nottinghamshire, targeting homes in areas such as Nottingham city centre, Mapperley, Woodthorpe, Ruddington, Bingham, Radcliffe-on-Trent, and Cotgrave. \Nottingham Crown Court heard how the gang employed a specialized technique known as 'snap lock' to gain entry into the properties. They used tools to break door handles, allowing them to bypass locks and then locate car keys. The prosecutor, Gareth Gimson, described the group's actions as a 'conspiracy,' spanning from 2020 to 2021, which triggered two dedicated police investigations by Nottinghamshire Police, codenamed Operation Terrestrial and Operation Pavlolva. \Sentencing the nine-member gang, Judge Stuart Rafferty KC highlighted the gravity of their crimes, stating, 'This was about money. This was about stealing expensive cars from large houses. You had knives, you had masks, you had all the equipment to snap locks to get in. It was also about helping yourselves to other people's property. The value of what you took was just under £300,001. £29,000 of (other) property was also taken, including jewellery which belonged to family members. What you stole and can't be replaced most of all is those people feeling safe in their houses again. Just imagine if someone broke into your home while your children or parents were asleep upstairs. You would be the first in the queue to complain.'The defendants, a mix of individuals ranging in age and criminal history, all pleaded guilty to charges including conspiracy to commit burglary, attempted burglary, and theft. \In another chilling case, two teenage gunmen, Romarni Spencer and Pharrell McLennon, terrorized a shopping centre in The Meadows when they fired shots at a man before attempting to flee the country. The then 17-year-olds booked flights to Spain from East Midlands airport, the day after the incident, their haste to escape highlighting the seriousness of their actions. Dramatic CCTV footage captured the masked duo aiming their revolvers at their intended target and firing twice as shoppers scrambled for safety, fleeing back into a store in a state of panic. The incident, which occurred in broad daylight at a busy shopping centre, sent shockwaves through the community. \Judge James Sampson, sentencing the pair, stressed the severity of gun crime, stating, 'In broad daylight, in the middle of the day, at a busy shopping centre, you tried to shoot your intended target, both firing in quick succession. You missed your intended target. Emerging from this store, as events were unfolding, was a family who quickly retreated to take cover, no doubt terrified about what was unfolding. As the Lord Chief Justice said in a case in 2009, 'the gravity of gun crime cannot be exaggerated. Guns kill, maim, terrorise and intimidate.'Spencer, from Marlborough Road, Beeston, and McLennon, from Maypole, Clifton, both pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. Spencer received a 10-and-a-half-year sentence, comprising seven-and-a-half years in custody plus a three-year extension. McLennan was handed a 13-year term, consisting of 10 years in custody and a three-year extension. Both teenagers will not be eligible for parole until they have served two-thirds of their custodial sentences. These recent cases serve as a stark reminder of the dangers that exist within our communities. They highlight the importance of vigilance and the need for continued efforts to combat criminal activity. The legal system played its role in holding these individuals accountable for their actions, but the broader community must also work together to create a safer and more secure environment for all
