A police officer has suffered serious injuries to his eyes, throat and respiratory system after being sprayed with ammonia while attending a 999 call.
Several officers forced entry to a property in Darwen, Lancashire, following reports of a domestic disturbance.The sergeant with serious injuries remains in hospital, while six others, all constables, have been discharged.A 46-year-old suspect escaped through a first floor window but was arrested a short time later, theA neighbour told the paper: ‘I can’t believe that has happened. I hope the officers are okay. It’s shocking.‘We had a murder not too long ago and now this.
‘My thoughts are with him and his family and I wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to his return to work.’ Chief Constable Andy Rhodes added: ‘My thoughts are with this officer and all of those affected by this incident, which shows once again the dangers that officers face and how they put their lives on the line each and every day to protect people.’
