After a frantic search for survivors, police are no longer expecting to find anyone alive
Seven of the nine people feared dead in a gas explosion that destroyed a block of flats in Jersey have been identified by police.
After a frantic search for survivors, police said on Sunday that they are no longer expecting to find anyone alive – but warned it may take “weeks” of work at the highly dangerous site to recover all the bodies and investigate the incident. Chief of Jersey Police Robin Smith said on Sunday that it “looked likely” the cause of the fire was a gas explosion and he vowed to investigate the circumstances.
Asked about the callout, the head of Jersey’s Fire and Rescue Service Paul Brown, said he was not able to give details “at the moment”, but vowed: “What you can absolutely have is a guarantee for me my personal commitment to you that we will be absolutely honest and transparent. And we will completely provide every item of information that is required.
