It has been indicated that a "number of persons" were confirmed deceased at the scene of the tragic incident earlier this evening.The Mountain Road has been closed off for the rest of the night and is expected to remain shut for some time tomorrow morning.
In a statement this evening, a Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are currently at the scene of a single vehicle fatal road traffic collision, near Clonmel, County Tipperary, that occurred earlier this evening, Friday 25th August 2023.An Garda Síochána is not in a position to provide further information at this time as Gardaí and other emergency services continue their work at the scene.
The Mayor of Clonmel, Cllr Richie Molloy, said that as news began spreading around the town people were shocked and very upset. He said: "At this stage we do not know who was involved but I know that there are a number of families receiving the most awful and tragic of news tonight. "Today was a happy day for the young people who received their leaving cert results and this has cast a cloud of sadness and grief over the entire community, young and old.
