Nottingham City Council is applying for nearly £250,000 to make repairs at Newstead Abbey
Part of the historic Newstead Abbey site now poses a "severe health and safety risk" as Nottingham City Council attempts to get funding to repair the issues. The Grade-I listed ancestral home of the poet Lord Byron , which now serves as a museum and events venue, has been on Historic England's 'heritage at risk' register for many years.
In a new report, the city council says a particular focus of the funding would be the Sussex Tower. The authority's report says: "The Sussex Tower is a priority area because it contains a redundant/rusty water tank which, due to deteriorated roofs, fills up during downpours and leaks rainwater into the rooms below causing damage to ceilings and walls.
