Wild winds are lashing Tasmania as a cold front crosses the island, with the severe weather predicted to last into Wednesday.

Power has been cut by fallen trees, while authorities are urging people in affected areas to prepare for possible flooding. The Bureau of Meteorology said the winds are expected to ease about southern and eastern areas, with the risk of destructive winds expected to ease late on Tuesday as the cold front moves across the state.

Westerly winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are expected to continue about western and northern coasts during Wednesday. Thunderstorms are also likely to develop on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning about the west, Bass Strait Islands and the north coast. "We will be monitoring the rain levels, with the possibility of widespread minor flooding due to catchments across Tasmania being relatively wet due to recent rainfall."
