There are three types of tornado alerts issued by the National Weather Service. Knowing the difference between the three is important. Meteorologist Matt Holiner breaks down what each alert means.

Heavy rain and lightning will be common. Some storms may produce damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and up to quarter size hail. Due to the slow movement of the storms, isolated flooding is also expected. A couple of EF0 or EF1 tornadoes are also possible.
Unnecessary travel should be avoided until the line of storms clears us this evening. Make sure weather radios are turned on and cell phones are fully charged so you can be alerted if a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning is issued for your location. If a tornado warning is issued, a tornado has been spotted and may soon move over you. Seek shelter in an interior room on the lowest floor of a permanent building immediately.
