I have taught women & gender studies at Oregon State University since 1996, including a course on gender, race & sports. Before this, I taught religious studies for 8 years at liberal arts colleges. I’ve served on OSU’s athletics committee and was the Faculty Athletics Representative at one of the liberal arts colleges.

Bruins during the second half in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament at MVP Arena on March 30, 2024 in Albany, New York. The LSU Tigers won, 78-69. NCAA women’s basketball is setting records and making news. More than 12 million viewers tuned in for the LSU-Iowa game on Monday,ESPN college basketball game broadcast ever. Behind me I could hear the taunts and derogatory comments being yelled by beer-bellied middle-aged men who couldn’t run 40 yards if their lives depended on it. Yet they felt free to insult and try to diminish this young man who was doing his best and doing something none of them could do.

What does insulting Angel Reese do for all these men? As a strong, young black woman who refuses to sit down and shut up, Reese is a threat to masculinity. She doesn’t know or accept her place, and they want to put her back in it. Lucky for us real fans of women’s basketball, that ain’t gonna work. Reese is going to be Reese, and I hope she’s laughing all the way to the bank.
