California State Controller Malia Cohen highlighted how state residents can recover money once thought lost

That’s functionally what happened to the San Francisco chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League, the oldest Asian American civil-rights organization in the nation.California State Controller Malia Cohen , a former president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, presented members of the organization with a $24,088 check earlier this week for two unclaimed properties — money that was left in an inactive financial account for more than three years and transferred to the state.

As part of the state Unclaimed Property Program, California residents can search for their names in a database to see whether they have unclaimed funds that can be obtained.
