In the eighth episode of Shōgun, Mariko experiences a transformative moment that leads to a significant change in her life. Actress Sawai discusses the scene and the character's journey in an interview.
This post contains spoilers about the eighth episode of Shōgun , “The Abyss of Life.” “In that scene, she gains clarity. Up until then, we see her giving up and asking permission to take her own life, because she doesn’t feel that she’s living up to the person that she should be,” Sawai says on this week’s Little Gold Men . “But she knows exactly what she needs to do, and that is what she wants to do. She gets to serve her lord…and she gets to free herself.
It’s revealed he survived, unbeknownst to the other characters, and that moment where we the audience see him again is a bit devastating—because we’ve just spent all this time with Mariko and Blackthorne enjoying this idyllic, romantic time together. I wish we got to see a little bit more of the happy times of them together, yeah. But we are covering the whole book in 10 episodes, and there’s only so much that we can cover. Episode four is very special in that way.
